Wright's Directory for Melbourne, Derbyshire 1874
C N WRIGHT’S DIRECTORY 1874 MELBOURNE MELBOURNE is a small market town and railway station on the Derby and Ashby turnpike road, in the union of Shardlow, and hundred of Repton and Gresley, county court district and archdeaconry of Derby, and rural deanery of Stanton-by-Bridge. It is 7 ½ miles SSE from Derby and was formerly the residence of the Bishop of Carlisle, who had a palace here. Here also was the baronial castle in which John Duke of Bourbon, who was made prisoner at the battle of Agincourt, was confined for several years. The castle was destroyed in 1640 by order of Queen Margaret and though subsequently restored scarcely a vestige of it remains.. The hall was one of the seats of the late Viscount Melbourne. The Episcopal palace is a large and beautiful mansion of stone. The principal apartments are of noble dimensions and adorned with a fine gallery of paintings by the ancient and modern masters. In the park there are extensive gardens, tastefully laid out in the Dutch style, with terraces and shrubberies and a magnificent avenue of ancient yew trees. The spacious lake is formed out of the river Lea which runs through the grounds and forms a charming feature of the landscape. Kings Newton Hall was the seat of the Hardringes, the ancestors of the present Lord Hardinge. The Church, dedicated to St Michael, is a very fine Anglo Norman structure, and was thoroughly restored about 15 years ago. A Church built here in the 7th Century is supposed to have been destroyed 200 years after its erection by the Danes, and the present building was then raised upon its site. It consists of a nave and side aisles, supported by pillars of 4 feet in diameter, surmounted by a triforium gallery. The massive tower is embattled and contains four tuneful bells. The vicarage which is oof the annual value of £350, is in the gift of Bishop of Lichfield. The parish is bounded on the north by the Trent , and comprises of 3463 acres. There are manufacturers of silk, gloves, boots and shoes. Sandstone of good quality for building, and also of a fine texture for sharpening scythes is found here. A market is held on Saturday for butter, poultry, vegetables &c. There is a Mechanics Institution, also Odd fellows and Foresters lodges. The New Jerusalem Church on the Derby Road is in the Gothic style. The new Wesleyan Chapel in Church Street is a beautiful stone building, and cost about £1900. it was opened in 1872 and will seat about 482 persons, The old Independence Chapel in High Street was first built in 1779, and enlarged in 1841 but has now given place to a handsome ediface of stone with schools adjoining, which were completed in 1872 at a cost of £1700. It will accommodate about 300 worshippers. The Athenaeum Hall is in Potter Street and is managed by a committee of 15 members. Mr William Hall is the secretary, manager and treasurer. There is an excellent Agricultural Book Society, but the library is not much used. Secretary Mr J J Briggs, Kings Newton; Librarian Mr T Pass. The Gas Works in Castle Street were erected in 1850; Directors Messrs T Hyde, J F Spencer, W Hemsley, G Smithered, W Knipe and Rev. E W Whittaker; Secretary Mr Jno Pass. There are National and Baptist day schools and an excellent private boarding school on Mount Pleasant, for boys under 12 conducted by Mr and Mrs Archer. The staple trade of the place may be said to be market gardening, as there are nearly forty firms who are engaged in this branch of the industry. As a necessary consequence there is a flourishing Horticultural Society; Mr I Smith is the Secretary; Mr Jas. Salsbury treasurer. The annual fair for the hiring of servants is on the Monday after October 11th . Weights and measures are adjusted at Wooden Box on the first Monday of every month. The population in 1871 was 2871. Melbourne hall is occupied by Mrs Gooch, who kindly throws open the grounds to visitors and excursionists every Wednesday afternoon and evening during the summer months |
