MELBOURNE
is a parish in the Hundred of Repton and Gresley; the village,
which is a considerable one, and of some antiquity, is 8 miles
SSE from Derby, and about 6 NNE from Ashby-de-la-Zouch;
the latter being the nearest Railway Station. The Market
is held here on a Saturday. A Statute for hiring Servants
is held on the first Monday after Old Michaelmas Day.
KINGS NEWTON
in the Parish of Melbourn, a neat little village, situated about
1 mile N from Melbourn, is celebrated for its charming scenery.
CHELLASTON,
an inconsiderable Parish, about 2 miles N from Melbourn and 4
miles SSE from Derby. There are several mines now working,
wherefrom they obtain Plaster Stone, which is conveyed by Canal
(distant about one mile from the mines) into the Staffordshire
Potteries (where it is largely consumed), and all over the
Country. The principal miners are Messrs. Rose, Trusswell,
Meakin, Newton and Wootten, all residents of the village.
