Tivey Family Genealogy

Thomas Tivey Born 1780

Thomas Tivey, 2nd eldest child of Mary Fairbrother and Edward Tivey, married Catherine Dent in Melbourne, Derbyshire in 1801: I have listed a brief outline of his tree as his descendants are listed in greater detail elsewhere on the site (see Group 2). Thomas also fathered a child with Lydia Sneap in 1812, bastardy papers show that he was held responsible through the Parish overseers for the child's upkeep.

Thomas was a Frame Work Knitter by trade, working as many of his neighbours and family did in the production of silk hosiery and other garments. Sadly it was an industry that was well on the decline by the 1840's; The Royal Commission in 1845 found that three quarters of all Framework Knitters were either unemployed or seriously under employed and dependent on Parish relief, many of his neighbours were claimants at the workhouse in Shardlow.  The family resided in Blanch Croft, these were frame work knitter cottages with long wide windows to help let the light in whilst working with the frames. The houses  still stand in the town today:

Thomas died in 1849; his wife Catherine died in 1861.
