By this time his eldest son Thomas and eldest daughter Frances were married, though still residing in Worthington and his son James was residing close by as a farm servant on the farm of Jabez Shakespear(e) a relative of his mother-in-law Frances Edwards (nee Shakespear). Joseph who is also listed, aged 5, was the son of John's daughter Jane Tivey.
By the 1851 census, only the youngest two children William and Emma reside with their parents who are living at Varley's Yard, Worthington:
On the 12th of December 1858 Ann Tivey (nee Edwards) died at her home in Worthington - Cause of Death is listed as " Dropsey not Certified" :
Ann was buried at Breedon on the Hill church yard on 16th December 1858.
