Sir-John-Proctor-Tivey-Death-Notice
Sir John Proctor Tivey (also known as
Percy) was the son of Samuel Tivey and Margaret Proctor who married in
Balmain, New South Wales, Australia. Samuel was the eighth of nine
children born to Samuel Tivey and Phoebe Wilde who emigrated to
Australia in 1848. Samuel junior was the first child born in Australia
to Phoebe and Samuel who had 7 children born in England previously. Sir
John was awarded a Knighthood in 1955 for his contribution to
engineering and industry in Australia. He graduated from the
University of Sydney and became a lecturer in Engineering at the
University of Queensland in 1911. In 1913-1928 he was an Engineer with
General Electric becoming Chief Engineer with the company
between 1929 and 1945, when he was promoted to Director. At various
points in his working career, he was chairman of the Technical Standards
Division, President of the Electrical Manufacturers of Australia, President
of the Institution of Engineers and President of the Associated Chambers
of Manufacturers. In his personal life he married
Lorna Violet Henderson in Sydney 1910 and two daughters followed - Jane
Proctor Tivey (Davis) born 1913 and Roberta Hales Proctor
Tivey (Falk) known as Bobbie who was born 1916 .
