Joseph Tivey was born in Derby, England in 1834 and shortly after moved to Nottingham with his parents Samuel and Phoebe. As a teenager his family emigrated to New South Wales, Australia. A few years later he and his brother left for Victoria to join the Gold Rush. He settled there, starting a provisions business selling food and drink to prospectors. His business boomed and he Married to Margaret Hayes, and settled in Inglewood where he and his wife had 10 children, 8 of which survived infancy, one of them was Major Edwin Tivey AIF. His grand house still stands on Verdon Street in the town * NOTE: His mother was Phoebe Wild(e) not Bennett as stated here.
