Herbert was the son of William Maxfield and Selina Underwood (Granddaughter of Selina Tivey and James Underwood). Herbert sadly drowned in the Canal at Leicester in January 1915. His mother, reputedly committed suicide 8 months later along with her lover Joseph Rogers, a local shoe hand, by throwing herself in the same canal. Her husband William, was away serving with the Warwickshire Regiment at the time.
