Edwin Tivey was born 1866 in Inglewood, Victoria, Australia. His father Joseph Tivey was born in Derby, England in 1833 - he emigrated with his family in 1848. Joseph spent time in New South Wales before moving to Victoria to join the Gold Rush in the early 1850's. He became a store owner and his business boomed selling provisions to gold prospectors. Edwin was well-educated and became a stockbroker by trade, he also had a distinguished military career reaching the heights of Major General in the Australian Imperial Force. He married Annie Bird Robb 1906 in Toorak and two children - Edwin Peter and Violet soon followed. Edwin died in 1947 -

OBITUARY
Maj-General E. Tivey dies at 81
Major-General Edwin Tivey, CB, CMG, DSO, VD, distinguished soldier of
two wars and descendant of one of Australia's pioneer families, died
yesterday at his Toorak home. He was aged 81. He was educated at All
Saints' Grammar School and Wesley College, and in his 40 years of
military service he saw action in the South African War of 1900-2 and
the war of 1914-18, in which he was gassed and twice wounded. In the
1914-18 war he commanded the 8th Infantry Brigade, and later, on
promotion to Major-General, he' commanded the 5th Division.
Major-General Tivey's wife died some years ago, and his son, Major Edwin
Peter Tivey, died in 1943 while a prisoner of war in Italy. One
daughter, Miss Violet Tivey survives him. The funeral will take place
today, leaving 159 Kooyong road for Brighton Cemetery at 3pm.
Arrangements are being made by Sleights ' Ptv Ltd. Major-General Tivey
was a member of the Stock Exchange of Melbourne for 43 years. As a mark
