William
Henry Tivey was born 1859 in Bilston, near Wolverhampton,
Staffordshire to parents William Tivey, a Tailor by trade
(1827-1892) and Amelia Brown (1825-1902) who married in Dudley 1855.
He was the older brother of Tom Brown Tivey (Senior) and Isaac
Morris Tivey. William Henry joined the Army at a young age and was
listed as a soldier RHA on his marriage to Kate Bedford in London
1889. he was stationed in India in the 1890's where sadly his
wife Katie succumbed to smallpox and sadly passed away at the age of
27 in May 1896. William came back to England after Kate's
death and in August of that year he married his first cousin Amy
Elizabeth Tivey, the daughter of his Uncle Francis Tivey and
Lucretia Brown. Amy and Elizabeth returned to Lucknow India and the
couple's only son George William was born in 1898. William then
served 1899 -1902 William served with the 2nd Battallion Scots
Guards and was awarded the King's South Africa Medal in 1902 for his
service in the Boer Wars: By 1903 he was back in India serving in
the Delhi Durbar Army. He later took up the civilian role of Warrant
Officer in the Military Work Service & Public Works Dept. William
was an active member of the Freemason's movement both in India and
in England were he returned on his retirement. The family settled in
Kirkley Gardens, Lowestoft, Suffolk. William Henry died at home on
the 24th August 1930. His son George William Tivey worked as a
council clerk in Lowestoft before he met Irish girl Margaret Cahill
who he married in Surrey 1922, George and Margaret were blessed with
two children Elizabeth May and Anthony. Thanks to Alison
