Named Leonard Noble Tivey and known as
Leonard, he was born in the Derbyshire town of Melbourne. He was
the oldest son and second child of George Henry Tivey and Martha
Fitchett. His middle name came from the surname of his
grandmother Susan Noble (married his grandfather Leonard Tivey
1859). Leonard worked on his grandparents farm in the hamlet of
Kings Newton near Melbourne form his early teenage years until
he joined the army, in both the 1901 and 1911 census he is
residing at his widowed grandmother Susan's house and is
employed by her as a Market Gardener.
Unfortunately, Leonard's army service record did not survive
second world war bombings of the war office in London, but from
the details on his medal card and the details from the
Commonwealth Graves Commission, we know he served in the 11th
Battallion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire
Regiment) Two of Leonard's brothers also served during the
war - Edgar Henry who was sadly killed in 1915 and Alfred
William who left the Territorial Army in 1916 because of his
agricultural occupation - he had previously served on home soil
since 1912. Although both Edgar and Leonard were born in
Melbourne, only Edgar appears on the Melbourne War Memorial.
Leonard was residing with his parents in Swadlincote at the time
of his death in Ypres and both he and Edgar appear on the
Memorial Gates at Eureka Park, Swadlincote. A big thank you to
Glyn Jackson,
Secretary of the Swadlincote Royal British Legion, for the
photographs of the Memorial below.
