Named John Tivey but known as Jack, he
was born in the Derbyshire town of Melbourne in 1876. He was the
youngest son and eighth out of ten children born to Edwin Tivey,
a market gardener and his wife Jane (nee Pass). The family
resided in various parts of Melbourne - The New York district,
Mount Pleasant, High Street and finally Moira Street. Like his
father before him, Jack worked as a Market Gardener's labourer
in the fields surrounding the town of Melbourne.
Jack joined the Territorial Force before the war started and
trained at weekends whilst carrying on with his regular day job.
When war broke out he transferred to the regular army and joined
the 5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire &
Derbyshire Regiment). On 21st June 1916 he arrived at Leeds
Military Hospital suffering from a fractured patella (Knee) as a
result of a military accident during battle (not gun shot
wound). He spent the next five months having various operations
until he was discharged from the battalion as unfit in April of
1917. He then transferred to the Labour Corps where he served in
the agricultural division until 3rd March 1919. Later that month
he developed an infection in his knee which subsequently killed
him. He was buried with honours in the Cemetery at Melbourne on
the 3rd April 1919 - the burial register lists his profession as
soldier. He was 43 years old.
