Frederick-Joseph-Tivey-of-The-Leicestershire-Regiment
Named Frederick Joseph Tivey, he was born in the
Leicestershire town of Coalville. He was the eighth of
ten children born to railway grinder William Tivey and his wife Harriett Watson.
Frederick also had a half sister Emily Watson who was the
illegitimate daughter of his mother Harriett. In 1911 he was a
school boy, residing with his widowed mother Harriett and his
siblings at 24 Oxford Street, Coalville, Leicestershire.
Unfortunately, his army record did not survive the World War Two
bombing raid on the War Office in London where the records were
held. During this raid, a large portion (approximately 60 % of
the 6.5 million records) was destroyed by fire, it is thought
that Frederick's record was one of these. From his medal card we
know that his regimental number was 203539 and that he was a
member of the 8th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He was
killed during the Third Battle of the Aisne on 27th May
1918 and is remembered with honour on both his hometown's War
Memorial in Coalville and on the Soissons Memorial in Aisne,
France. |
