Francis Tivey was born in Melbourne, Derbyshire, 1810 to parents Ann Holmes and William Tivey. He joined 95th Regiment of Foot in 1827, before transferring to the Royal Marines in 1829. In 1834 he married Martha Hancock at Pembroke St Mary's. They had 3 children William Francis Tivey, Ellen Jane Tivey (Webb) and James Henry Tivey, the family settled in Greenwich, Kent after Francis retired from duty.
