Edgar-Henry-Tivey-of-The-Sherwood-Foresters
Born Edgar Henry Tivey and known as Edgar, he
was born in the
Derbyshire market town of Melbourne. He was the fifth child of
nine children born to parents George Henry Tivey and Martha
Fitchett. Edgar was 17 years and 6 months old when he first
joined the military in 1912 when he joined the Territorial
Force. At that time, he was a market gardener's labourer,
working for John Derwent in nearby Kings Newton. He was
evetually transferred to the 5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters
when he came of age. He fought in the trenches of Rouen and
Versailles and was wounded in the field on the 4th November
1915, he sadly died a day later from his wounds. He is
honoured both on his birth town's war memorial at St Michael's in
Melbourne and in the Caberet Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez,
France. His brother Leonard Noble Tivey was also killed in
action two years later in 1917. Both Leonard ans Edgar are
remembered on the
Swadlincote Memorial Gates at Eureka Park. |

On the War Memorial in the town of Melbourne Derbyshire, he
is listed as PTE (Private) Edgar Tivey. Thanks to Janet Martin
