Born Berkeley Thomas Tivey 1893 in Greenhill,
Harrow, Hendon, Middlesex, England, he was the second eldest
child of George Berkeley Tivey and Emma Mary "Durer" Pudney.
Berkeley joined the West Sussex Constabulary on 6th April 1914
and then enlisted at Worthing, Sussex. Corporal SD/741 11th Bn.,
Royal Sussex Regiment. He Died 16th February 1915 age 21, his
home address at that time was Chapter Road, Willesden Green,
London. He was buried at Willesden New Cemetery, Middlesex Grave
reference G. 557 The SD prefix was a very distinctive army
number. It indicated that the holder had volunteered for service
in the Sussex Pals and stood for South Downs Battalions. The
South Downers were also known as 'Lowthers Lambs' after Colonel
Claude Lowther who had been instrumental in their formation and
recruitment. Volunteering in November 1914 his efficient work
soon won him promotion. He vendered services of a valuable
nature until he contracted cerebro-spinal meningitis, of which
he died on February 16th 1915
