Born Alfred Arthur Tivey in Nimmitabel, Cooma, New South Wales, Australia, Alfred was the youngest of nine children born to parents Alfred Tivey and Eliza Ann Wright. His father was born in Nottingham, England in 1836 and his family emigrated to New South Wales in 1848 settling in Nimmitabel. Alfred was unmarried when he died in Somme, France but at the time of his death his Fiancee Dorie Moore had given birth to a daughter Muriel who was then brought up by Alfred's sister Ruby Rebecca Tivey (Green): His first cousin was the distinguished Major General Edwin Tivey.
Alfred died of wounds on 9th May 1918 in Villers-Bretonneux, France.
