Agnes
Irene Chavasse was known as Renee to her friends and family. She was
born in Wolverhampton 26th November 1893 to parents Agnes Lucretia
Tivey (1866-1906) and Harry Chavasse. She was also brought up her
maternal grandmother Lucretia Tivey (nee Brown) after the
death of her mother, aged 40 in 1906. She is said to have been a
companion and dear friend of Ellen Terry, the famous actress and it
is through this friendship that she met and married (1919) George
Merritt (1890-1977) an actor who starred in over 50 films and also
worked in television and theatres. The photograph on the left was
taken in 1922 when she was a bridesmaid and witness to her cousin
Elsie Madeline Tivey's marriage to Frederick William Hill, the other
is taken in the late 1950's and is thought to feature her grandson
Paul S Merritt, son of her only child John Stafford George Merritt
(1920-1999)
